Optical sensors
The black plate on the back of Apple Watch features four sensors that detect skin contact
and your pulse. Infrared and visible light LEDs are used in tandem with photo sensors to
detect your heart rate. Apple Watch uses this sensor, along with an accelerometer and GPS
data from your iPhone to measure your physical activities and movements. This enables
Apple Watch to provide a detailed overview of your daily activity, suggest new fitness
goals and reward you for reaching milestones.
