already 25 out of 126 offices possessed a mapping interface and some even an atlas
application (in 2002). After certain pioneers, like the Atlas of Canada (digital:
1987/Online: 1999) and the Statistical Atlas of the United States , also several
European NSIs issued web atlases with statistical data shortly after the beginning
of the new millennium (Germany, Switzerland, France, Netherlands, United King-
dom, Sweden etc.). Table 6 shows the current offer of statistical atlases by 47 -
European countries (study conducted by the author in January 2014). Today, more
than one third of all countries call a Statistical Atlas on the national level their own
(18 nations), and one to two countries can be added to this list every year, which is a
