framework can help to overcome the typical technology-centeredness of
Web-mapping application design and instead to put the prospective users in
the focus of design. What is still missing and could become a project for
further research is the inclusion of user experience (UX) factors within a
UCD framework for Web mapping applications as well as the development of
a methodology for testing the user experience of Web maps
This paper presented an excerpt of the doctorate research (Schobesberger
2012a ) conducted in the area of user-centred design for Web-mapping appli-
cations. For further information, the full dissertation can be downloaded at
the Website of the ICA Commission on Use and User Issues ( http://www.

Acknowledgments The research underlying this paper was partly funded by the University of
Vienna Research Grant 2011 and the Austrian Science Fund Research Network (FWF S-98) “The
Cultural History of the Western Himalaya from the 8th Century”. I am very thankful to my
doctorate supervisor Prof. William Cartwright for his invaluable support and assistance.
