Data and Information
From a bathing tub
I throw water into the lake -
slight muddiness appears.
—Hekigodo Kawahigashi (1873-1937)
Successful information systems depend on a good understanding of what
one wants to track and why. A solution designer for such a system needs
to recognize the differences, and the relationship between data and
information. Thinking about data and information must include ideas
about:
Recognizing the nature of data
. Data and information can be
looked at in various ways — original or derived, formal or informal,
raw or processed, data or metadata, complete or incomplete, to
name a few.
Designing information delivery
. Designing information delivery is
about selecting the right approach, representation, and organiza-
tion. It requires an understanding of how the root of information
processing lies in forms and workflows.
. The management of data requires
inclusion in the solution of many related tasks such as retention,
tracking of changes, classification of data, reconciliation, migration,
and others.
