Any classification scheme used must be simple and have clear rules
for deciding how to classify the requirements. These rules must maintain
a chain of clarity. For example, one might adopt a classification criteria
saying that a requirement is critical if its impact on customer satisfaction
is high. This leads to the need for defining customer satisfaction itself.
For example, a need to provide online help could be classified as having
a medium impact on customer satisfaction, thereby classifying the require-
ment itself as medium.
A Hierarchy of Requirements
Application requirements can also be organized as a hierarchy of require-
ments (Figure 4.2). If we begin from the user end, these can be seen as:
