In-Depth Information
In Grand Teton National Park, Leigh and Jenny Lakes are stocked with lake, brown,
brook and Snake River cutthroat trout. One of the best fishing spots is on the Snake River
just below the Jackson Lake dam (with parking on both sides of the river). Ice fishing is
growing in popularity, although spring and fall offer the best fishing.
Outside the parks, the Madison is the region's most acclaimed river, though it's also the
most mobbed, especially during early July's salmon fly hatch. Fishing shops offer equip-
ment and guides, and float trips proliferate around the region's prime fishing areas. Hit
them up for tips on where to fish and what flies to pack. Fly 'afishionados' should check
out the free casting clinics at Jacklins Fly Shop in West Yellowstone ( Click here ) every
summer Sunday evening.
Fishing Licenses
A Yellowstone National Park fishing permit is required to fish in the park. Anglers 16
years and older must purchase a $15 three-day permit, a $20 seven-day permit or a $35
season permit. To fish in Grand Teton National Park, only a Wyoming fishing license is
required (with a $10.50 conservation stamp for all but one-day licenses).
Wyoming
Outside of the two parks, Wyoming generally offers fishing all year round. Fishing li-
censes are purchased according to whether you want them for daily (nonresident/resident
$14/6) or yearly (nonresident/resident $92/24) use. For details contact the Wyoming
Game & Fish Department (
307-777-4600; http://gf.state.wy.us ) .
Montana
Fishers must have a conservation license (nonresident/resident $10/8), good for life, and a
fishing license. A seasonal license (nonresident/resident $44/18) is good for one year; a
two-day stamp costs $15. Contact the Bozeman division of Montana Fish, Wildlife &
Parks (
406-994-4042; http://fwp.mt.gov/fishing ; 1400 South 19th, Bozeman, MT) for
both.
Idaho
Local vendors and the Idaho Department of Fish & Game ( 208-334-3700; ht-
tp://fishandgame.idaho.gov ) issue fishing licenses. Daily licenses cost $13 for the first day
and $6 for additional consecutive days; or purchase a full-season license (nonresident/res-
ident $98/26).
