Work
Occasional seasonal jobs (for US citizens only) are available as rangers or laborers with
the National Park Service, though competition for these jobs is fierce. Check for openings
at www.nps.gov/personnel , www.nps.gov/yell/parkmgmt / ynpjobs.htm and
www.usajobs.gov .
Your first stop should be Coolworks ( www.coolworks.com ) , which is an excellent
clearing house for jobs both in and around the parks. The page www.coolworks.com/
yell.htm deals specifically with the Yellowstone region.
The main Yellowstone Concessionaire, Xanterra ( human resources 307-344-5324,
24hr application request line 307-344-5627; www.yellowstonejobs.com ) , employs 3000
people in summer and 300 in winter, who do everything from making beds to making
soup. Pay starts at about $7 per hour and employee morale generally seems pretty low.
Employee housing and food cost around $70 per week (RV sites $30 to $40 per week).
Apply in December for summer jobs and in August/September for winter positions. Staff
are a mix of students, overseas workers (who need to arrange their own work visas) or re-
tirees living in their RVs.
You may also find opportunities with Delaware North ( 877-600-4308 in Bozeman;
www.visityellowstonepark.com ) , who runs the Yellowstone General Stores and several
gateway hotels. It employs around 800 people a year.
The third Yellowstone concessionaire, Yellowstone Parks Service Stations
( www.coolworks.com/ypss ) , is based in Gardiner and has work for clerical as well as
automotive technicians.
