MUSEUM
National Museum of Wildlife Art
( 307-733-5771; www.wildlifeart.org ; 2820 Rungius Rd; adult $10, child free with
adult; 9am-5pm; ) If you visit only one area museum, make it this one, with major
works by Bierstadt, Rungius, Remington and Russell that will make your skin prickle.
The discovery gallery has a kids' studio for drawing and print-rubbing that adults plainly
envy. Check the website for summer film series and art-class schedules. Under renovation,
this Arizona sandstone facility blends into the landscape overlooking the National Elk
Refuge, just northeast of town on the west side of US 26/89/191.
NATURE RESERVE
National Elk Refuge
( 307-733-9212; 675 E Broadway; daylight hours Oct-May) About 7000 Rocky
Mountain 'welfare' elk (and a few hungry wolves) winter on alfalfa hay pellets here when
snow covers the native grasses. Access these 25,000 acres northeast of Jackson via Elk
Refuge Rd, an extension of E Broadway. Bundle the kids up for the refuge's one-hour
winter sleigh ride (adult/5-12yr $16/12) , departing from the National Museum of Wild-
life Art mid-December through early April. These elk provide the 'raw materials' for the
antler arch on Jackson Town Sq, celebrated with Elkfest ( Click here ) .
FISH HATCHERY
Jackson National Fish Hatchery
(
307-733-2510; 1500 Fish Hatchery Rd;
8am-4pm) Just north of the elk refuge,
with daily tours.
