In-Depth Information
The nearby Chapel of the Transfiguration Offline map (1924) has aspen pews and
views of the Tetons through the altar window. In summer Episcopal services are held on
Sundays.
Just beyond is Moose Entrance Station and the Craig Thomas Discovery & Visitor
Center Offline map , offering interpretive displays, an auditorium hosting excellent speak-
ers and events, and the largest selection of books in the park. The park's southern hub,
Moose also offers accommodations, restaurants and shops, and serves as the jumping-off
point for many park activities. It also serves as the center for wintertime park activity.
THE SNAKE RIVER
Ansel Adams immortalized the Snake as a luminous ribbon retreating from sharp snowbound peaks. With outstand-
ing wildlife-watching, this iconic river is a prime spot for boating. For white-water rafting options, Click here .
Commercial trips
Float trips (averaging adult/child $60/40) start after Jackson Lake Dam and meander through park wilderness; the
wildest white-water flows south of the town of Jackson. Usually kids must be six years or older to participate.

Do it Yourself
The easiest do-it-yourself float is the 5 miles from just below Jackson Lake Dam to Pacific Creek Boat Launch. Pa-
cific Creek to Deadman's Bar and Flagg Ranch to Lizard Creek are considered intermediate floats. Anything south
of Deadman's Bar is considered advanced. Deadman's Bar to the Moose landing is the most commonly offered
commercial white-water trip and is considered Class II. Southgate (at Yellowstone's South Entrance) to Flagg Ranch
via Flagg Canyon is considered advanced Class III white-water. You'll find boat put-ins near Oxbow Bend, at Pacif-
ic Creek, Deadman's Bar, Schwabacher's Landing and Moose.
Early trappers didn't name the Snake the 'Mad River' for nothing! The highest water levels are in spring.
Independent floaters should have all the required safety equipment (including life jackets and throw bag) and know
how to use it. For information on Snake River flows call
800-658-571.
Save your inner tubes and air mattresses for the lake - they are explicitly banned on the river.
