COLTER BAY
At Colter Bay Visitor Center, the Indian Arts Museum Offline map (admission free
8am-5pm May & Sep, 8am-8pm Jun-Aug) displays artifacts from the collection of David
T Vernon, including beautiful beadwork, bags and photographs. At the time of research,
the center was planning a remodel for 2012. It's well worth browsing; pick up a spiral-
bound museum guide for a self-guided tour, or take a daily guided tour. The visitor center
offers books on Native American history and lore. There are frequent craft demonstra-
tions, and videos are shown all day on subjects ranging from wildlife to Native American
art.
South of the visitor center is the marina and trailhead for hikes to Swan Lake and Her-
mitage Point. A popular picnic and swimming area sits just north of the visitor center,
though there's countless other secluded swimming and sunbathing spots dotted around
Jackson Lake.
For a nice evening or early-morning stroll, try the 45-minute Lakeshore Trail , which
traces a figure eight across a causeway onto a small island. Take the forest trail that dips
onto the beach or just walk along the shore. The trail starts on a paved road beside Colter
