ies and fly-fishers. The tidy cabins are perhaps the best value in the valley. It is on the
Gallatin River 11 miles south of the Big Sky turnoff.
320 Ranch $$

19th-century ranch occupies a beautiful swathe of the Gallatin, 12 miles south of Big Sky
by the Buffalo Horn Creek Trailhead. Guests stay in spacious duplex log cabins with ac-
cess to a fishing pond (casting lessons cost just $35), outdoor hot tub and trail rides (activ-
ities are open to nonguests). Couples should splash out on the historic McGill cabin
($250).

Covered Wagon Ranch $$$

per night per person $200) Three miles from Yellowstone, near Taylors Fork, this 1925
ranch feels more rugged than some of the rhinestone-cowboy ranches around. With a
strong emphasis on riding, a top offer is the small pack trips into Yellowstone.

Gallatin Gateway Inn $$

of the valley, 12 miles from Bozeman, the Spanish-style Gallatin Gateway is an elegant
retreat built by the Milwaukee Railroad in 1927 as the Yellowstone line terminus. Despite
later incarnations as an antique-cars showroom and even a women's mud-wrestling arena,
the inn is once again a quiet and classy place to stay. After dinner in the Porter House res-
taurant retire to the great main hall, with its huge fireplace and Baby Grand.

Rainbow Ranch offers a select group of pondside or riverside rooms, all with roaring
stone fireplaces, balconies and access to the romantic outdoor hot tub. The Pondside Lux-
ury rooms are easily the most stylish. The lodge is 5 miles south of the Big Sky turnoff
and 12 miles north of Yellowstone.
