ROCKY MOUNTAIN BREWS
The Yellowstone states of Wyoming and Montana are fast developing a reputation among beer hounds for hosting
some of the country's best microbreweries.
Snake River Brewing Co ( Click here ; www.snakeriverbrewing.com ) in Jackson is the region's most popular
brewpub. Flagship beers include the Austrian-style Snake River Lager, the crisp Snake River Pale Ale, the dark
and creamy Snake River Zonker Stout, and numerous other brews.
Teton Valley's Grand Teton Brewing Company ( www.grandtetonbrewing.com ) uses local spring water to pro-
duce its Old Faithful Ale, Teton Ale and Moose Juice Stout. Its Teton Huckleberry Wheat is one of several popu-
lar regional fruit beers.
Missoula's Bayern Brewing ( www.bayernbrewery.com ) is the only German microbrewery in the Rockies,
serving up amber, pilsner, Killarney and Hefeweizen beers. Big Sky Brewing ( www.bigskybrew.com ) , also of
Missoula, produces Montana's best-selling microbrew, Moose Drool, a creamy brown ale with hints of coffee.
The English-style Scape Goat pale ale is also excellent.
Actually from Big Sky, Lone Peak Brewery ( www.lonepeakbrewery.com ; Meadow Village; 11am-10pm)
is a kid-friendly brewpub equipped with a fine shuffleboard and light food menu. The Lone Peak IPA and Nordic
Blond are the most popular, or try a range of 4oz samples for $1.25 each.
Yellowstone Valley Brewing ( www.yellowstonevalleybrew.com ) in Billings names all its beers after fishing
flies, including the amber-colored Wild Fly Ale, the dark, malty Renegade Red Ale, the clear Grizzly Wulff
Wheat and the full-flavored Black Widow Oatmeal Stout. Pop into the Brewhouse Garage Pub (2123 1st Ave N;
4-8pm Mon-Sat) in Billings for a sample, before heading to nearby Angry Hank's (2405 1st Ave N) for more
excellent Billings brews (the Head Trauma India Pale Ale is recommended).
If you are headed along the Beartooth Hwy, drop into Red Lodge Ales ( Click here ) en route for a brewery
tour (phone ahead) and sample of their refreshing German-style Glacier Ale or grapefruit-infused Bent Nail.
In Bozeman, head for the excellent Montana Ale Works ( Click here ) to try the region's best brews, including
