Murray Hotel $$
( 406-222-1350;
www.murrayhotel.com
; 201 W Park St; r $89-169; )
Central to
Livingston's history since 1904, the Murray is the place to bed down with the ghosts of
gunslinger Calamity Jane and director Sam Peckinpah (who lived in a suite for over a
year, occasionally shooting holes in the ceiling). The ancient hand-crank lift and creaky
wood floors set the tone, but the 25 rooms are fresh and modern, and most are mini-suites
with galley kitchens and clawfoot tubs. The Peckinpah suite ($339) is a six-sleeper treat
but avoid the cheapest 2nd-floor rooms ($79 to $89), as they pulsate with noise from the
bar below until 2am.
