CUSTER'S LAST STAND
The best Billings day trip is to Little Bighorn Battlefield ( 406-638-3204; www.nps.gov/libi ; per vehicle $10;
8am-9pm, earlier closing outside of summer ), the site of Custer's Last Stand, just an hour's drive (65 miles)
east of town. You can drive around the battle sites or, better, take a short local tour in the company of a Crow guide
with Absalooke Tours (
406-38-3114 ).
If you're here for the last weekend of June, visit for the Custer's Last Stand Re-enactment ( 406-665-3577;
www.custerslaststand.org ; adult/child $20/8 ), 6 miles west of Hardin. Pack your handlebar moustache and you can
even attend the weekend ball; only those dressed in 1876 attire are allowed in!
On the way back history buffs can pop into Pompey's Pillar National Monument ( www.pompeyspillar.org ; per
vehicle $7; 8am-8pm) , home to the engraved 1806 signature of William Clark and the only physical evidence
remaining of Lewis and Clark's famed transcontinental journey.
