Old Faithful Inn $$
( ste $399-499, d $126-236, without bath $96; early May-early Oct ) The lobby of this
historic place is a bit of a zoo during the day, but the day-trippers quickly disappear with
the sun. The building is full of charm, with 327 rooms, a lovely balcony, library-style
desks and century-old furniture, and a pianist and singer at lunch and dinner. A stay here
is a quintessential Yellowstone experience, but book well in advance or you'll find there's
no room at the inn.
The hotel has a vast variety of rooms, including some wheelchair-accessible rooms. The
cheapest 'Old House' rooms pack the most atmosphere, with historically correct wash
basins, but the bathrooms are down the hall. Beware also that you can hear every footstep
through the creaking wooden ceiling, and the radiator heat can be noisy early and late in
the season. Easily the best rooms of this kind are the two- and three-bed 'dormers' off the
3rd-floor lobby.
Families might like the two connecting rooms that can sleep five, either with private
bathroom ($213) or with bathroom down the hall (around $30 less). Rates for these rooms
are per room, regardless of the number of people.
The only rooms that have a view of Old Faithful are a couple of 'premium' rooms on
the front side of the east wing; these get snapped up a year in advance. Back rooms in the
east wing cost $25 less and have no view. Even if you face Old Faithful, you'll find that
the pine trees block most of the view.
The west wing has comfortable 'frontside' rooms ($220) - those on the upper floor
have decent views of the geyser basin. The standard 'high-range' rooms ($150) vary con-
siderably for the same price (rooms with two beds are noticeably larger). Both have bath-
rooms and can sleep up to four.
The only bum rooms in the hotel are the high-range rooms in the 1000 room number
series, as these are below the ground floor. Staff refer to these affectionately as the 'dun-
geon rooms.' Request a higher floor.
