Horseback Riding
Daily stagecoach rides (adult/under 11yr $9.35/7.50) depart from Roosevelt Lodge three
to five times daily and last around 45 minutes. For a treat, ask for the tallyho seat.
Old West cookouts are a fun family trip, either on horseback (one-hour trips adult/under
12 $68/57, two-hour trips $84/72) or by horse-drawn wagon ($57/46 per person); reserva-
tions are required months in advance. Trips depart daily in the late afternoon and travel to
the former site of Uncle John Yancey's Pleasant Valley Hotel (1884-87), one of the park's
earliest accommodations, for a gut-busting, all-you-can-eat chow-down of steak and beans
accompanied by campfire music. The excursion lasts for about three hours.
Corrals next to Roosevelt Lodge offer trail rides (1/2hr $38/58) , four times a day,
through sagebrush country. Two-hour rides run just once a day, so reserve ahead. Children
must be over eight years old. Rides can be cancelled after rain.
Horse-packing parties must obtain a backcountry-use permit for overnight trips. A horse-
use permit is also required for day trips. Both are available at most ranger stations. The
Horse Packing in Yellowstone pamphlet lists regulations. Pack animals include horses, bur-
ros, mules, ponies and llamas.
Some backcountry trails are closed to stock, and those that are open may be temporarily
closed in spring and early summer due to wet conditions. Overnight pack trips are not al-
lowed until July 1. Stock can only be kept at designated campsites. Hay is not permitted at
the trailhead or in the backcountry.
Xanterra
( 307-344-7311; www.yellowstonenationalparklodges.com ) The park concessionaire
operates all the activities listed above. Reservations are recommended and can be made by
phone or at activities booths at most hotels. All the activities operate from early June to
early September. Xanterra also offers one-/two-hour trail rides for $38/58 at corrals just
south of Canyon (eight times a day, late June to late August) and one-hour rides from cor-
rals just north of Mammoth (four times a day, late May to early September), in the shadow
of Bunsen Peak. Once again, the two-hour ride departs just once a day, so reserve ahead.
