(two-night limit, stock parties only) on its northeast side, 8J4 and 8J6 on the southeast

SIDE TRIP: MT SHERIDAN
4-6 HOURS, 6 MILES, 2800FT ASCENT
The Mt Sheridan Trail crosses over open meadows briefly before its spiraling ascent
along a steep spur largely covered in whitebark pines. Bring plenty of water; there is none
available on the trail.
You will come to a saddle flanked by wind-battered firs. Continue left (southeast) up
the narrowing tundra ridge over old snowdrifts to reach the 10,308ft talus-covered sum-
mit. The fire lookout (staffed in summer but otherwise locked) scans 360 degrees from
Pitchstone Plateau to the west, Shoshone Lake to the northwest, Yellowstone Lake to the
northeast and the jagged Tetons to the south. Snowdrifts often persist through mid-July.
DAY 2: HEART LAKE TO HEART LAKE TRAILHEAD
