Horse Trails & Equestrian Facilities
Yellowstone allows private stock only after July 1, due to snowy and wet conditions.
While horses are not allowed in front country campgrounds, some backcountry sites ac-
commodate them. A favorite of riding groups, Bechler Corner has a number of sites, con-
tact the
backcountry ranger office
( 307-344-2160)
.
Bringing a horse or pack animal with you requires extensive advance planning. Down-
load backcountry stock rules and grazing information from official national parks web-
sites, which also list guided, multiday stock trips using horses or llamas. Contact

In Grand Teton National Park late snows sometimes delay the opening of backcountry
stock campsites: consult with the
parks permit office
( 307-739-3309).
Stock users
often camp in national forests and travel in on day trips. Outside the park, stock camping
areas in the John D Rockefeller Jr Memorial Parkway (between Flagg Ranch and Grassy
Lake) do not require a permit. For stock camping in the Bridger-Teton National Forest,
consult the
supervisor's office
( 307-733-5500).
Inside Grand Teton National Park, Death Canyon Trailhead Rd boasts the only vehicle-
accessible stock campsite. Backcountry stock camping is allowed in the north fork of
Granite Canyon, Death Canyon, the south fork of Cascade Canyon, Paintbrush Canyon
and Berry Creek. Obtain your backcountry permit at visitor centers.
