Using the Mill Safely
Most of you reading this topic will probably be working alone in a small work-
shop, your garage or a garden shed. If you get hurt, you are possibly on your
own. As a priority, I suggest you take a walkabout or mobile phone into the
workshop with you and keep it in your pocket. The ability to quickly contact
your family, a friend or the emergency services could save your life. Do not
attempt to work on a milling machine and talk to someone at the same time. If
you have to talk to someone or answer the telephone, switch the milling ma-
chine off before doing so.
The area around a milling machine should be kept free of obstructions and
the floor should be clean and dry. Any oil or other spills should be cleaned up
immediately. The milling machine should be kept clean and tidy.
Workbenches placed near to a milling machine should be strong and
equippedwithanon-slipsafetysurfacetostopitemssuchastoolsfromrolling
onto the floor - a piece of rubber car mat will suffice. Measuring equipment,
tooling and workpieces should not be left on the milling machine table as they
can vibrate off onto the floor.
