In-Depth Information
countershafts require lubrication. Most new milling machines will have sealed
bearings, but some motors on older milling machines might have greasing
points.
To lubricate the cutting tools, I suggest you use cutting oil rather than water-
based soluble oil. The water-based oil will not protect the machine from rust
or corrosion over the long term and may even cause rusting. Oil and water
should be kept well away from digital readout slides if fitted.
Adjusting the milling machine
All sliding surfaces should be adjusted to give minimum play while still allow-
ing free movement. Time spent adjusting the milling machine will pay for itself
with ease of use and minimum chatter.
Protecting the milling machine slideways
The slideways should be protected wherever possible. This can take the form
of a piece of sheet rubber over the mill's sliding surfaces to stop swarf from
falling onto them. It is easy to add the rubber; cut it to fit and sandwich the
ends between a couple of strips of metal that can be screwed or clamped to
the machine. You do not have to drill the machine; one end could be attached
to the dovetail or round column with clamps, and the other end can be fixed
to a round bar that just rests in the groove found around the machine's table.
