Drilling, Tapping and Reaming
DRILL CHUCKS
A drill chuck is essential on the small mill. It is ideal for holding drills, taps and
reamers. However, it should never be used to hold milling cutters. The result-
ing side load or end load could cause the chuck to fly off its arbor, resulting in
untold damage.
There are two main chuck types: the keyed chuck, which as its name sug-
gests is opened and closed with a key, and the keyless chuck, which is
opened and closed by hand.
The chuck will usually be fitted to a Morse taper arbor or possibly an R8
arbor. A useful alternative chuck mounting method is to fit the chuck onto a
short parallel shank and hold it in one of the machine's collets, such as an
ER25 collet. You could also use a side lock holder, which is especially useful
if you have a small chuck for drills smaller than, say, 4mm. You can buy par-
allel arbors with a hand feed for these small chucks; the hand feed allows you
to feed the drill into the work by holding a knurled ring on the adaptor.
