In-Depth Information
If you have many small gears to make you could put a long piece of bar,
previously turned to the outside diameter of the gear, into the dividing head
and supported by the tailstock. Then you can mill all the way along the bar to
make a 'stick' of gear blanks. When you have machined the entire length, you
can put the stick into the lathe, supported by the lathe's tailstock, and part off
the individual gears. Finish the gears by holding in soft jaws and facing both
sides of the gears. Finally drill and ream for the shaft. This is a quick method
of making large quantities of gears.
