LOOKING AFTER YOUR INDICATOR
Lever dial test indicator
There is little in the way of maintenance you can do to a lever dial test indicator other
than ensuring that the stylus is tight in its seating and giving it a wipe over with a bit
of tissue paper or similar.
Plunger dial test indicator
The plunger dial test indicator can usually be cleaned by squirting cigarette lighter
petrol down the plunger hole and sliding the plunger up and down a few times. Any
remaining petrol will evaporate very quickly.
Do not do this near a naked flame and do not smoke while doing this.
Do not use lighter fuel on a digital plunger dial test indicator.
Mounting the indicator
There are various ways of mounting a dial test indicator on the milling ma-
chine. The most often used method is to hold it in a drill chuck or collet in
the milling machine - this is most often used to clock holes true; or it can be
placed on a magnetic base to clock faces of vice jaws or angle plates true.
