twice the least count of the instrument, both the readings should be discarded, and
fresh readings taken again. This will eliminate errors due to oversight, misreading,
and mistakes like reading with a stuck compass. The field topic in which readings
are noted should be drawn into a table before beginning work (Fig. 3.2 ).
The distances to be measured in plane surveying are the true horizontal distances.
For practical purposes, however, it will suffice to measure the distances along the
