started by excavating soil from nearby borrow pits. Soil is spread out in 20 cm thick
uniform layers and then compacted by ramming with stone hammers to a thickness
of 10 cm. Alternatively, a sheep's-foot roller can be used for compaction. Usually a
relative compaction of 0.95 or higher should be achieved.
