This painting depicts the first cow pox vaccination by Edward
Jenner. The child being vaccinated is held down, while his arm is
scratched with a needle containing cow pox. On the right is a milk
maid who is rewrapping her hand, presumably covering the cow pox
pustules from which the vaccination was taken.
