Programmed cell death (PCD) is also called apoptosis. The
process is shown here. In programmed cell death, a cell dies through
structural changes and the breakdown of the nucleus is followed by ingestion
of the cell by scavenging white blood cells. PCD is a normal process in
development and in response to DNA damage that cannot be repaired.
