4.3.7 AXILLARY BUDS
Maximum number (fourteen) of axillary buds were developed in T5 which
was followed by T3 (twelve) during 72 days (Table 7). Initially during
24 DAP T5 and T3 had only single axillary bud and showed slow growth
where as T4 and T2 showed rapid growth and had developed 2 and 4 buds
respectively. The ranking order of the sets to be clear from the perfor-
mance record as: T5>T3>T4>T2>T1.
4.3.8 DEVELOPMENT OF FLOWERS
Maximum numbers of fl owers (seven) were developed in T5 which was
followed by T3 (six) (Table 8). In all the sets fl owers appeared fi rst during
48 DAP but T2 and T4 was much more effi cient initially than T3 and T5.
The diameter of the fl owers in T3 and T5 were much more (100 mm) than
the others (30).
4.3.9 LONGEVITY OF THE FLOWERS:
In all the sets fl owers appeared during 48 DAP but the fl owers became
almost dried within 60 DAP in T1 and T2 sets and already dried within
72 DAP in T4 set (Table 9). The fl ower buds and fl owers were very soft,
became fl accid and were not subjected to long lasting whereas the fl owers
of T3 and T5 sets were hardy, stiff and were freshly long lasted even up to
72 DAP (30).
4.4 DISCUSSION
The results of the present work refl ected that the chemical fertilizer had
taken away large amount of nutrients from the soil with high initial yields
which had resulted in the gradual depletion of some nutrients (35). As a
result the yields were signifi cantly lowered during the later stages, where
as the vermicompost had showed initially the low release of soil OC but
