Figure 5-1. Cooling Tower/Evaporative Condenser Installation Guidelines
3. Most fuel storage tanks are installed above grade and provided
with a spill containment enclosure. While the tanks should be
located relatively close to the boilers to reduce fuel piping and
pumping costs, there is no real restriction on their location. How-
ever, screening and locked doors and gates will typically be re-
quired. Drains from the open containment area must be provided
with locked valves, to be opened to drain rainwater only by autho-
rized personnel.
4. Packaged hot water boilers designed for outdoor installation are
available in capacities up to about 2,000,000 Btu/h. Typically these
boilers are about 3-6 feet square and 4-6 feet high and a single
boiler requires 75-100 sf of outdoor area to allow for service. Two
boilers require 120-140 sf of area, with each additional boiler add-
ing 50-60 sf to this requirement. The location, arrangement, and
screening requirements for outdoor boilers are generally the same
as for air-cooled equipment. However, since the hot surfaces of
these boilers represent a potential public safety hazard, access to
this equipment must be controlled via secure screening with lock-
able access openings.
Outdoor ground level equipment access for routine maintenance
is rarely a problem. However, when time comes to replace the equip-
