In-Depth Information
Serious cross-country skiers will want to head far north to where the Canadian nation-
al team trains in Labrador West. The Wapusakatto Mountains ( Click here ) let loose with
good, cold, dry snow from late October to late April, a much longer season than else-
where in the region - or anywhere in Canada.
Wentworth is the favorite spot in Nova Scotia, although it's small with 815 vertical
feet and 20 runs. See www.skiwentworth.ca for more details about the slopes. The park
also offers cross-country skiing and snow shoeing.
New Brunswick has three ski parks, the biggest being Poley Mountain
( www.poleymountain.com ) near Sussex, with more than 100 acres of ski-able terrain and
10 night skiing trails.
For further information contact the Canadian Ski Council ( 905-212-9040;
www.canadianskicouncil.org ) .
Other Winter Sports
Windsor, Nova Scotia, claims to be the birthplace of hockey so, as you'd expect, there
are plenty of ice-skating areas around the region, although not many cater to visitors.
You're best bet for gliding across the ice is at the new Emera Oval in downtown Halifax
where even skate lending is free of charge.
Dog sledding, snow mobiling and ice climbing are all available with My Newfound-
land Adventures ( Click here ) in Newfoundland . A half-day sled ride is a whopping (but
many say worth it) $400.
