In addition to farmers markets in cities, roadside stands offer enticing seasonal produce
in rural areas. Do yourself a favor and pick up a container of strawberries (best in June)
or blueberries (August).
The food truck movement is catching on in Halifax. The most popular at the time of
research were Food Wolf (internationally inspired comfort food) which tends to linger
around the North End, and Nomad Gourmet (burgers, burritos and waffle sandwiches),
which is nomadic as you'd guess but announces its whereabouts on its website
www.nomadgourmet.com .
Outside the cities, you might come across the occasional roadside van selling fish and
chips, and lots of seafood markets serve inexpensive lobster rolls, sandwiches and chow-
der. Poutine (French fries topped with gravy and cheese) isn't as prevalent here as in
some other areas of Canada but it is on a few menus. Barring that, well, there's always
Tim Hortons.
Vegetarians & Vegans
Vegetarians will be well catered for in the region's principal cities such as Halifax, Fre-
dericton and St John's, but as you move away from urban areas your options become ex-
tremely limited. Vegans can expect an even rougher ride. Strict adherents should stick to
any vegetarian-only eateries they come across, since 'vegetarian' items in mainstream
restaurants may well have been prepared with meat stock or lard. We have marked res-
taurants that cater particularly well to vegetarians with a vegetarian icon ( ).
Specialty health food shops are found almost exclusively in the larger cities or hip col-
lege towns so you'll want to stock up on supplies before going to more remote regions.
Chinese eateries occasionally pop up in remote areas and may be another option. Many
