The Glenora Distillery ( Click here ) on Cape Breton Island produces a very sip-worthy
single-malt whiskey, and a group in Guysborough, Nova Scotia, has plans to open an
even bigger distillery on its shores. Prince Edward Distillery ( 902-687-2586;
www.princeedwarddistillery.com ; Rte 16, Hermanville; 11am-6pm) makes award-
winning spirits from, you guessed it, potatoes, as well as a few grain-based beverages.
Just around the corner, Myriad View ( Click here ) cooks up a tonsil-searing 'Lightning
Shine' that's 75% alcohol and the only legal moonshine in Canada. Newfoundland is
famous for its Screech, a brand of rum that's actually made in Jamaica.
A signature Canadian drink worth trying is the Ceasar, a Bloody Mary-ish cocktail
made with Clamato (a tomato and clam juice-based beverage), vodka, hot sauce and
Worcestershire sauce. It's a good Sunday morning hair-of-the-dog drink, imbibed on ice
in a salt-rimmed glass and garnished with lime and a stalk of celery.
You can get quality coffee, including espresso and cappuccino, in cities. Barring that,
the ubiquitous Tim Hortons doughnut shops brew a respectable cup.
Celebrations
Food and drink are a big part of celebrating in Atlantic Canada. Summer's seafood fest-
ivals, autumn is Thanksgiving, winter has Christmas get-togethers, and spring's Easter
holidays traditionally feature generous family feasts with plenty of meat dishes, salad
bowls, giant desserts, beer and wine. A hearty, family-focused Sunday dinner is also a
common event.
