In-Depth Information
Other marine artists include HM Rosenberg, who was the principal at the Victoria
School of Art and Design (now known as NSCAD University) in Halifax from 1898 to
1910. Rosenberg took a mix of European styles from Gauguin to Sargent to create his
own realistic yet stylized approach that's universally appealing. Many of his works can
be seen today in the permanent collection at the AGNS.
The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic's art collection focuses on ship-related marine
works, but the AGNS has a substantial collection as well.

Atlantic Realism is perhaps most often associated with Mount Allison University in
Sackville, New Brunswick. In fact, the University's School of Fine and Applied Arts
was the first to grant a Bachelor's degree of this kind in Canada.
Halifax was home to the country's first art school. In 1887 The Victoria School or
Art and Design was founded by Anna Leonowens, then renamed the Nova Scotia
College of Art and Design (NSCAD) in 1925 and, over the course of its 125 years,
has produced some of the country's brightest artists. From members of the Group
of Seven, such as Arthur Lismer, to members of the International art scene, like
Gerhard Richter, Nova Scotia and NSCAD have provided a perch from which to fly.

The unique quality of the light here, coupled with the breathtaking and rugged
scenery, has long lured artists. Many are drawn to opportunities and rigor that ex-
ist in its intellectual centre and the space afforded them in its open spaces. The
monetary opportunities are fewer, with smaller cities and longer distances
between them. The creative economy, however, is alive and well: galleries and mul-
tifaceted businesses that support artists are becoming more in number and more
resourceful in how they show artists' work.

A drive around the provinces will allow you ample opportunities to encounter the
rich artistic output. In Nova Scotia, for example, explore from the galleries of
Mahone Bay, Lunenberg and Chester, to the artist-run centres of the Annapolis
Valley to Antigonish, and Cape Breton is an art-lover's wonderland. The Cape Bre-
ton Centre for Craft and Design in Sydney offers a wide range of local artists' work,
specializing in craft. It also houses handsome and expansive studios. University
galleries across the region house contemporary art exhibitions that showcase work
from far and near. Fairs, flea markets and even a walk through the towns will offer a
glimpse of artists' handiwork.
