In-Depth Information
Mary's Harbour to Cartwright
After departing Mary's Harbour you'll pass through Port Hope Simpson 53km up the
road, and then there's nothing for 186km until Cartwright.
Cartwright-based Experience Labrador ( 709-938-7444; www.experiencelabrador.com ;
Jul & Aug) runs adventure trips that range from 2½-hour kayaking jaunts ($50) to day-
long boat and hiking tours ($250). The latter go along the Wonderstrands' endless sands
that mesmerized the Vikings so long ago.
In 2010, the federal government created the Mealy Mountains National Park Reserve
from 11,000 sq km of caribou-crossed boreal forest between Cartwright and Happy
Valley-Goose Bay. Once the park gets up and running (which is taking place slowly),
paddlers, snowshoers, cross-country skiers and hikers will have access to an unblemished
wilderness.
Other than that, Cartwright is about the ferry. Passenger boats depart for the remote
villages that sprinkle the northern coast. Labrador Marine (
866-535-2567,
709-535-0810; www.labradormarine.com ) has the schedules.
Rte 510 continues west to Happy Valley-Goose Bay. Contact the Department of
Transportation & Works ( www.roads.gov.nl.ca ) for the latest conditions.
OFF THE BEATEN TRACK
TORNGAT MOUNTAINS NATIONAL PARK
From Nain, you can try to arrange boat transportation to otherworldly Torngat
Mountains National Park ( 709-922-1290; www.pc.gc.ca/torngat ) at Labrador's wintry tip.
The park headquarters is in town, and staff can direct you to local Inuit guides. The
mountains are popular with climbers because of their altitude (some of the highest
peaks east of the Rockies) and isolation. The Kaumajet Mountains , south of the
park, also make for an out-of-this-world hiking experience.
The Inuit-run Torngat Mountains Base Camp and Research Station ( 855-867-6428;
www.torngatbasecamp.com ; Jul & Aug) offers package tours, including air transporta-
tion from Happy Valley-Goose Bay. At camp, activities include hiking, boating and
flightseeing. An electrified fence keeps out polar bears.
