Sights
The park is quite widespread - it's 133km from Trout River at the south end to Cow
Head in the north - so it takes a while to get from sight to sight. We've listed the follow-
ing places from south to north. Don't forget to stop in the park's visitors centers, which
have interpretive programs and guided walks.
Tablelands GEOGRAPHIC FEATURE
(Rte 431, near Trout River) Dominating the southwest corner of the park are the unconquer-
able and eerie Tablelands. This massive flat-topped massif was part of the earth's mantle
before tectonics raised it from the depths and planted it squarely on the continent. Its
rock is so unusual that plants can't even grow on it. You can view the barren golden phe-
nomenon up close on Rte 431, or catch it from a distance at the stunning photography
lookout above Norris Point.
West of the Tablelands, dramatic volcanic sea stacks and caves mark the coast at
Green Gardens .
Bonne Bay Marine Station AQUARIUM

9am-5pm Jun-Aug) At the wharf in Norris Point is the Bonne Bay Marine Station, a re-
search facility that's part of Memorial University. Every half-hour there are interactive
tours, and the aquariums display the marine ecological habitats in Bonne Bay. For chil-
dren, there are touch tanks and a rare blue lobster lurking around.
SS Ethie SHIPWRECK
(Rte 430, past Sally's Cove) Follow the sign off the highway to where waves batter the rusty
and tangled remains of the SS Ethie . The story of this 1919 wreck, and the subsequent
rescue, was inspiration for a famous folk song.
Broom Point Fishing Camp HISTORIC SITE
(Rte 430, Broom Point; 10am-5:30pm May-Oct) This restored fishing camp sits a
short distance north of Western Brook Pond. The three Mudge brothers and their families
fished here from 1941 until 1975, when they sold the entire camp, including boats, lob-
