In-Depth Information
The Change Islands are home to the Newfoundland Pony Sanctuary (
709-621-6381; 12 Bowns Rd; admission by donation; by appointment) , established to increase
numbers of the native, endangered Newfoundland pony. Less than 100 registered beasts
of breeding age remain in the province, and this humble stable of 11 ponies is the largest
herd. The small creatures are renowned as hardy workers (especially in winter) with
gentle temperaments. Pony rides are available for $5 to $10. Call first to make sure
someone is on-site before visiting.
