TOP OF CHAPTER
South of St John's
Cape Spear
A 15km drive southeast of town leads you to the most easterly point in North America.
The coastal scenery is spectacular, and you can spot whales through much of the sum-
mer. The area is preserved as the Cape Spear National Historic Site ( 709-772-5367;
www.pc.gc.ca/capespear ; Blackhead Rd; adult/child $3.90/1.90; grounds year-round) and in-
cludes an interpretive center ( 10am-6pm May-Oct) , the refurbished 1835 lighthouse (
10am-6pm Jun-Aug, reduced hours May, Sep & Oct) and the heavy gun batteries and
magazines built in 1941 to protect the harbor during WWII. A trail leads along the edge
of the headland cliffs, past 'the most easterly point' observation deck and up to the light-
house. You can continue all the way to Maddox Cove and Petty Harbour along the East
Coast Trail; even walking it a short way is tremendously worthwhile.
Heed all signs warning visitors off the rocks by the water, as rogue waves have been
known to sweep in.
You reach the cape from Water St by crossing the Waterford River south of town and
then following Blackhead Rd for 11km.
Goulds & Petty Harbour
In Goulds, at the junction of Rte 10 and the road to Petty Harbour, is Bidgood's
( www.bidgoods.ca ; Bidgood's Plaza; 9am-7pm Mon-Sat, 10am-5pm Sun) . It's just a normal-
looking supermarket, except for the fresh seal flipper (in pies, jars or jerky-like strips)
and caribou steak purveyed at the back of the store. For the faint of heart, partridgeberry
and bakeapple jams are the other Newfoundland specialties on hand.
Its back lapping up against steep rocky slopes, movie-set-beautiful Petty Harbour is filled
with weathered boats, wharves and sheds on precarious stilts. North Atlantic Ziplines
( www.zipthenorthatlantic.com ; 2½hr trips adult/child $115/90) is quite scenic. Depending on
when you go, you might see whales or moose. There are five trips per day.
