Getting Around
TO/FROM THE AIRPORT
St John's International Airport is 6km north of the city on Portugal Cove Rd (Rte 40). A
government-set flat rate of $25 (plus $3 for each extra passenger) is charged by taxis to
go from the airport to downtown hotels and B&Bs; Citywide Taxi ( 709-722-7777)
provides the official service. However, when you make the trip in reverse - ie from town
to the airport - taxis run on meters and should cost a few bucks less.
CAR & MOTORCYCLE
The city's one-way streets and unique intersections can be confounding. Thankfully, cit-
izens are incredibly patient. The parking meters that line Water and Duckworth Sts cost
$1.25 per hour. Sonco Parking Garage (cnr Baird's Cove & Harbour Dr;
6:30am-11pm)
charges $1.50 for 30 minutes or $11 per day.
PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION
The Metrobus ( www.metrobus.com ) system covers most of the city (fare $2.25). Maps and
schedules are online and in the visitors center. Bus 3 is useful; it circles town via Military
Rd and Water St before heading to the university. The new 'trolley line' (it's actually a
bus) loops around the main tourist sights, including Signal Hill. It costs $5/20 per person/
family per day.
