In-Depth Information
If there has been substantial rain or high winds, all visible life is completely lost in the
murkiness.
To get here from downtown, take Bonaventure Ave north to Allandale Rd and follow
the signs; it's about 2km.
ST JOHN'S FOR CHILDREN
St John's will keep the wee ones entertained, rain or shine. CA Pippy Park is a kids'
haven, with a huge playground, lots of trails and, of course, the Fluvarium. The
ever-hungry ducks at the pond in Bowring Park ( www.bowringpark.com ; Waterford Bridge
Rd) love company, as do the sea creatures at the Ocean Sciences Centre ( Click
here ).
Just knowing a cannon will blast at the end of the tattoo should keep kids riveted
at Signal Hill ( Click here ) . The various boat tours are also a great bet, but inquire if
there are icebergs and whales in the area first. While geology may not initially spark
their interest, the fact that the Johnson Geo Centre ( Click here ) is underground
may do the trick. Older kids will enjoy the ghostly tales of the St John's Haunted
Hike..
Activities
Golf and cross-country skiing enthusiasts can partake in CA Pippy Park.
Excellent walking trails zigzag across the area. The Grand Concourse
( www.grandconcourse.ca ) is an ambitious 160km-long trail network throughout St John's
and environs. Many hikes are in the CA Pippy Park and Quidi Vidi Lake areas. Defin-
itely make time for the sea-hugging North Head Trail on Signal Hill. The concourse web-
site has route details for all walks.
The epic East Coast Trail ( www.eastcoasttrail.ca ) stretches 265km from Cape St Francis
south to Cappahayden; a further 275km is to be developed. It's part easy coastal walking,
part tough wilderness trail. The website has details on free weekly guided hikes; you can
also volunteer to do trail cleanup. An excellent stretch runs along the coast from Cape
Spear.
Tours
Boat
For most tours, you need to head south of town to Witless Bay.
