In-Depth Information
( 902-652-2466; 7 West St; mains $12-37; 11am-9pm) Some claim this place serves PEI's
best chowder, but no matter what your opinion, you can't help but ooh and aah about the
water view from the deck or through the dining room's giant windows.
Cardigan Lobster Suppers LOBSTER SUPPER $$$
( 902-583-2020; www.peicardiganlobstersuppers.com ; Rte 311; adult/child $39/26; 5-9pm
Jun-Oct) In tiny Cardigan, enjoy a five-course lobster supper in a heritage building on
Cardigan Harbor.
DON'T MISS
BASIN HEAD PROVINCIAL PARK
While thispark (off Rte 16) is home to the Basin Head Fisheries Museum (
902-357-7233; adult/student $4.50/2; 9am-6pm Jun-Sep) , its star attraction is the sweep-
ing sand of golden Basin Head Beach . Many islanders rank this as their favorite
beach and we have to agree. The sand is also famous for its singing - well, squeak-
ing - when you walk on it. Unfortunately, the sand only performs when dry, so if it's
been raining, it's no show. Five minutes of joyous 'musical' footsteps south from
the museum and you have secluded bliss - enjoy!
TOP OF CHAPTER
Souris
Wrapped around the waters of Colville Bay is the bustling fishing community of Souris (
sur -rey). It owes its name to the French Acadians and the gluttonous mice who re-
peatedly ravaged their crops. It's now known more for its joyous annual music festival
than for the hungry field rodents of old. The PEI Bluegrass & Old Time Music Festival
( 902-569-3153; www.bluegrasspei.com/rollobay ; Rte 2; early Jul) draws acts from as far
away as Nashville. Come for just a day, or camp out for all three.
This is a working town that's a friendly jumping-off point for cycling the coastal road
(Rte 16) and the Confederation Trail, which comes into town. Souris is also the launch-
ing point for ferries to the Îles de la Madeleine in Québec.
