Point Prim
This skinny bucolic spit of land is covered in wild rose, Queen Anne's lace and wheat
fields through summer and has views of red sand shores on either side. At the tip is the
province's oldest lighthouse (adult/child $7/2; 9am-6pm) ; we think it's one of the pret-
tiest spots on the island. Climb up the steep lighthouse steps to pump the foghorn and for
panoramas over the south coast on sunny days.
Many folks come out this way to dig razor, soft shell, bar and quahog clams with
Happy Clammers ( 866-887-3238; www.experiencepei.ca ; adult/child $90/25 minimum 4
people) . Once you've filled your buckets, go home to Gilbert and Goldie's house to
steam up your catch and to dine on other treats cooked up by this charming local family.
Get even more into the treasures of this coast with Seaweed Secrets (
866-887-3238; www.experiencepei.ca ; adult/child $90/25, min/max 4/8 people; Mon, Tue, Thu
& Fri) , where you can harvest seaweed and learn about which types are edible or have
medicinal qualities; it's all led by a local family who have been in the industry for gener-
ations, plus a knowledgeable marine botanist.
Eat at Chowder House (chowder with a biscuit $8; 11am-7pm) , a homey cafe near the
lighthouse reminiscent of Cape Cod circa 1950; it serves a mean chowder and homemade
pie.

Wood Islands
Wood Islands is the jumping-off point for ferries to Nova Scotia. A visitors information
center (
902-962-7411; Plough Waves Centre, cnr Hwy 1 & Rte 4;
10:30am-9pm) is just
along the road from the terminal.
If you'll be waiting a while at the terminal, Wood Islands Provincial Park and its
1876 lighthouse are well worth the short walk. Munch a rock crab sandwich or a lobster
roll at Crabby's Seafood (snacks $4-7;
noon-6pm Jun-Sep) near the ferry terminal.
