( 902-894-3486; 45 Great George St; 9am-5pm) Rising from the ashes of a 1913
fire, the three towering stone spires of this neo-Gothic basilica are now a Charlottetown
landmark. The marble floors, Italianate carvings and decoratively embossed ribbed ceil-
ing are surprisingly ornate.
CYCLING THE CONFEDERATION TRAIL
Following the rail-bed of Prince Edward Island's erstwhile railway, the 357km-long
Confederation Trail is almost entirely flat as it meanders around hills and valleys.
There are some sections of the trail that are completely canopied by lush foliage,
and in late June and the early weeks of July the trail is lined with bright, flowering
lupines. There's perhaps no better way to enjoy the fall's change of colors than by
riding the trail.
The 279km tip-to-tip route from Tignish, near North Cape, to Elmira, near East
Point, is a rewarding workout, passing through idyllic villages, where riders can
stop for meals or rest for the night. Note that the prevailing winds on PEI blow from
the west and southwest, so cycling in this direction is easier. Branches connect the
trail to the Confederation Bridge, Charlottetown, Souris and Montague.
Provincial tourist offices ( www.gov.pe.ca/visitorsguide ) have excellent route maps and
their website offers a plethora of planning and trail information. The bicycle rental
shops in Charlottetown also run superb island-wide tours.
Tours
Self-guided walking tour booklets are available for just a Loonie ($1) at the tourist office.

( 1800-565-0278; 6 Prince St; adult/child $15/8; daily Jul & Aug) There is no better way to
tour Charlottetown. Playing the fathers and ladies of Confederation, actors garbed in
19th-century dress educate and entertain through the town's historic streets. Tours leave
from Founders' Hall, and there are three variations on the theme: historic Great George
St, Island Settlers and the haunts of local ghosts.
