CAR & MOTORCYCLE
The Confederation Bridge ( 888-437-6565, 902-437-7300; www.confederationbridge.com ;
car/motorcycle $43/17; 24hr) is the quickest way to get to PEI from New Brunswick and
east central Nova Scotia. Unfortunately, the 1.1m-high guardrails rob you of any hoped-
for view. The toll is only charged on departure from PEI, and includes all passengers.
If you're planning to travel one way on the bridge and the other way by ferry, it's
cheaper to take the ferry to PEI and return via the bridge.

PEI's capital is just about the perfect size, with a collection of stylish eateries and a lively
cultural scene. Couple this with quiet streets for strolling, abundant greenery and a well-
preserved historical core, and you have plenty of small-town appeal.
History
Charlottetown is named after the exotic consort of King George III. Her African roots,
dating back to Margarita de Castro Y Sousa and the Portuguese royal house, are as le-
gendary as they are controversial. While many believe the city's splendid harbor was the
reason Charlottetown became the capital, the reality was less glamorous. In 1765 the
surveyor-general decided on Charlottetown because he thought it prudent to bestow the
poor side of the island with some privileges. Thanks to the celebrated 1864 conference,
however, Charlottetown is etched in Canadian history as the country's birthplace.
