suites with carpet and unstylish plaid bedding. Upper floors have better views. The
private barbecues and the pool and hot tub overlooking the bay are major draws. The fur-
nished cottage (sleeps four maximum) is nice for families.

& Restaurant SEAFOOD $
( 506-747-2222; www.45thparallel.ca ; 941 Hwy 772, Fairhaven; mains $6-25; 7:30am-9pm)
The specialty is seafood at this small, rustic country classic with a homey feel and great
food. Ask to see Herman, the monster lobster. The creaky-but-clean motel rooms (from
$62) are a fine bargain, too.
Information
There's a summertime tourist information kiosk ( www.deerisland.nb.ca ;
10am-3pm Thu-
Tue) at the ferry landing.
Getting There & Away
A free government-run ferry (25 minutes) runs to Deer Island from Letete, which is
14.5km south of St George on Hwy 172 via Back Bay. The ferries run year-round every
half-hour from 6am to 7pm, and hourly from 7pm to 10pm. Get in line early on a busy
day.
The private East Coast Ferries ( www.eastcoastferries.nb.ca ; car & driver $16, additional pas-
senger $3; 9am-6pm end Jun-mid-Sep) links Deer Island Point to Eastport, Maine, an at-
tractive seaside town. It leaves for Eastport every hour on the hour.
TOP OF CHAPTER
Campobello Island
The atmosphere on Campobello is remarkably different from that of Deer Island. It's a
gentler and more prosperous island, with straight roads and better facilities. The wealthy
have long been enjoying Campobello as a summer retreat. Due to its accessibility and
proximity to New England, it feels as much a part of the USA as of Canada, and most of
the tourists here are Americans.
