About 10km southwest of Taylor Head Provincial Park, Tangier is one of the best set-

ductions to sea-kayaking (half-/full-day $75/115), rentals (single/double kayaks $45/65)
and guided trips. The establishment also has a cozy, excellent-value B&B, Paddlers
Retreat (s $50, d $60-85; mid-Jun-mid-Oct; ) .

www.murphyscampingontheocean.ca ; 291 Murphy's Rd; campsites/RV sites $27/39, trailer rental
$70-90; mid-May-mid-Oct; ) gets you out of your tent and into the water to collect
mussels; you eat your labors at a beach barbecue to the music of yarns told by Brian the
owner. There are RV sites, RV rental, secluded tent sites and a very rudimentary room
above the dock that can sleep four people. Boat rental is $75 per hour and there's also
drop-off and pickup services for camping on the islands.
Don't miss a snack stop at J Willy Krauch & Sons Ltd ( 902-772-2188; 35 Old Moose-
land Rd, off Hwy 7; 10am-5pm Mon-Fri, 9am-5pm Sat & Sun) , famed for making the tastiest
smoked fish in the province. Choose from a variety of salmon, eel, mackerel and more -
don't forget to bring some crackers.
TOP OF CHAPTER
Charlotte Lake to Jedore
The tiny Fisherman's Life Museum ( 902-889-2053; http://fishermanslife.novascotia.ca ;
58 Navy Pool Loop; adult/child $4/2.75; 10am-5pm Jun-Oct) , 45km toward Halifax from
Tangier, should really be renamed. The man of the house used to row 16km to get to his
fishing grounds, leaving his wife and 13 daughters at home. The museum really captures
women's domestic life of the early 20th century. Costumed local guides offer tea and
hospitality.
Some 6km down the highway towards Halifax, Memory Lane Heritage Village (5435
Clam Harbour Rd, Lake Charlotte; adult/child $6/4; 11am-4pm Jun-Oct) re-creates the 1940s
via antique cars, a farmstead with animals (great for kids), mid-century-style meals and
displays of then new fangled (but now old) washing machines, appliances and more.
