Free guided tours around the site are offered throughout the day. Travelers with mobil-
ity problems can ask for a pass to drive their car up to the site; there are ramps available
to access most buildings. Be prepared for lots of walking, and bring a sweater and rain-
coat even if it's sunny when you start out. There's also an ever-changing array of tours
and activities on offer, from nighttime candlelit walks to period dinner theater; check the
website for what's on each season.
Though the scale of the reconstruction is massive, three-quarters of Louisbourg is still
in ruins. The 2.5km
Ruins Walk
guides you through the untouched terrain and out to the
Atlantic coast. A short
interpretive walk
opposite the visitors center discusses the rela-
tionship between the French and the Mi'kmaq and offers some great views of the whole
site.
Three restaurants in the site serve food typical of the time.
Hotel de la Marine
and the
adjacent
L'Épée Royale
(grilled cod with soup $14, 3-course meal $20)
are where sea captains
and prosperous merchants would dine on fine china with silver cutlery. Servers in period
costume also dish out grub at
Grandchamps House
(meals $9-15)
, a favorite of sailors
and soldiers. Wash down beans and sausage with hot buttered rum ($4). Otherwise buy a
1kg ration ($4) of soldiers' bread at the Destouches Bakery. There's also a small coffee
shop between the restaurants serving hot drinks and a few snacks.
