TOP OF CHAPTER
Pictou
Many people stop in Pictou for a side trip or as a stopover via the ferry from PEI, but it's
also an enjoyable base for exploring Northumberland Strait. Water St, the main street, is
lined with interesting shops and beautiful old stone buildings but, unfortunately, the sea
views are blighted by a giant smoking mill in the distance. The town is known as the
'Birthplace of New Scotland' because the first Scottish immigrants to Nova Scotia
landed here in 1773.
Sights & Activities
You can picnic and swim at Caribou/Munroes Island Provincial Park.
Hector SHIP
(admission $7.50; 9am-7pm Jun-Oct) A replica of the ship Hector that carried the first 200
Highland Scots to Nova Scotia is tied up for viewing. Descend into the large hull
crammed with bunks to get a feel of how challenging the crossing was. The ticket in-
cludes admission to Hector Heritage Quay ( 902-485-4371; 33 Caladh Ave; adult/student
$5/2; 9am-5pm Mon-Sat, noon-5pm Sun May-Sep) , which has an interpretive center, a re-
created blacksmith shop, a collection of shipbuilding artifacts and displays about the
Hector and its passengers.
