a breathtaking place with a 5km-long beach piled high with driftwood that changes dra-
matically with the tides. Behind the beach, salt marshes reclaimed with dikes by the Aca-
dians are now replete with birds.

Joggins
Between Amherst and Advocate Harbour on Chignecto Bay, Joggins is famous for its
Unesco World Heritage fossil cliffs, said to be the best place on Earth to see what life
was like over 300 million years ago in the late Carboniferous period. The wealth of
fossils in the 15km of seaside cliffs are preserved in their original setting and include rare
land species. The state-of-the- art Joggins Fossil Centre ( www.jogginsfossilcliffs.net ; 100
Main St; admission from $10.50; 9:30am-5:30pm May-Nov) is the place to start your visit
and explains through displays and film what you can see in the cliffs below. Ticket price
includes a half-hour tour, but you can also opt for a ticket including a two- ($25) or four-
hour ($55) tour. The best time to visit the cliffs is at low tide when all of the beaches can
be accessed - otherwise you'll be cut off from some of the more interesting sites by high
water. Tours leave on an irregular schedule, depending on the tides; you can reserve in
advance on the website.
