Fort Anne National
Historic Site HISTORIC SITE

9am-5:30pm) This historic site in the town center preserves the memory of the early Aca-
dian settlement, plus the remains of the 1635 French fort. Entry to the extensive grounds
is free, but you'll also want to visit the museum, where artifacts are contained in various
period rooms. An extraordinary four-panel tapestry, crafted in needlepoint by more than
100 volunteers, depicts 400 years of history.
Annapolis Royal Historic Gardens GARDENS
( 902-532-7018; www.historicgardens.com ; 441 St George St; adult/student $10/8.50;
9am-8pm May-Oct) Gorgeous Annapolis Royal Historic Gardens covers a rambling 6.5
hectares with various themed gardens, such as an Acadian kitchen garden one might have
seen in the late 1600s and an innovative modern one. Munch on blueberries, ogle the ve-
getables and look for frogs. The Secret Garden Café offers lunches and German-style
baked goods.
Port Royal National
Historic Site HISTORIC SITE
( 902-532-2898; 53 Historic Lane; adult/child $4/2; 9am-6pm) Some 14km northwest of
Annapolis Royal, Port Royal National Historic Site is the actual location of the first per-
manent European settlement north of Florida. The site is a replica of de Champlain's
1605 fur-trading habitation, where costumed workers help tell the story of this early set-
tlement.
Tidal Power Project MUSEUM
( 902-532-5454; 10am-6pm) A hydroelectric prototype at the Annapolis River
Causeway, Tidal Power has been harnessing power from the Bay of Fundy tides since
1984. An interpretive center includes models , exhibits and a video.
Tour Annapolis Royal WALKING TOUR
( www.tourannapolisroyal.com ; Fort Anne National Historic Site; 9:30pm Tue-Sun) Runs several
history-oriented tours. The best is where an undertaker-garbed guide leads a creepy tour
(adult/child $7/3) of the Fort Anne graveyard. Everyone carries a lantern to wind through
the headstones and discover the town's history through stories of those who've passed.
Proceeds go to the Annapolis Royal Historical Society.
