In-Depth Information
Cape St Mary to Meteghan
A long, wide arc of fine sand, just 900m off Hwy 1, Mavilette Beach is great for collect-
ing seashells, and the marsh behind it is good for birdwatching. At the southern edge of
Meteghan, the largest community on the French Shore, Smuggler's Cove Provincial
Park is named for its popularity with 19th-century pirates. A hundred wooden stairs take
you down to a rocky beach and a good cave for hiding treasure. There are picnic sites
containing barbecue pits at the top of the stairs, with a view across St Mary's Bay to Bri-
er Island.
Stop for lunch at La Cuisine Robicheau (9651 Hwy 1, Saulnierville; mains $8-29;
8am-9pm Tue-Sun) , which serves this area's most haute Acadian cuisine. The rappie pie,
seafood lasagna and chocolate pie may make you exclaim 'sacré bleu!' they're so good
and affordable. There's often live music at suppertime during summer.
À la Maison d'Amitié B&B ( 902-645-2601; www.houseoffriendship.ca ; 169 Baseline Rd; r
$140-175; ) is perched dramatically on a cliff close to the beach on six private hectares.
The huge, American-style home has cathedral ceilings and sky-high windows with views
on all sides.

LIVING WHARVES
Between mid-June and the end of September, the Acadian coast, from Dennis
Point to Belliveau Cove and five points between, invites you to get a hands-on ap-
preciation for what this area is all about: fishing. Each day of the week, one of the
seven wharves opens up for visitors from 1pm to 4pm. During this time, active and
retired fisherfolk tell yarns about their sea adventures and let you try your hand at
a few odd jobs. More than anything, it's a great place to meet locals, hear stories
and get closer to the salty lifestyle of Nova Scotia's south. More information is
available at www.livingwharves.com .
